11/3/2009 - New Guidelines for Merchant Mariner Examinations
On October 30, the U.S. Coast Guards National Maritime Center (NMC) released new forms for the conduct of merchant marine physical examinations. These forms becomes mandatory on January 1, 2010. ACOEM member Capt. Matthew D. Hall, MD, MPH, acting U.S. Federal Maritime Surgeon at NMC, has asked that ACOEM take a lead role in informing our members and others of these important changes. The essentials, with relevant links follow below:
The Merchant Mariner Credential Medical Evaluation Report form (CG-719 K, Revision 01-09) and the Merchant Mariner Evaluation of Fitness for Entry Level Ratings form (CG-719 K/E, Revision 01-09) have been revised to facilitate obtaining objective medical information for use in evaluating merchant mariner credential applications. The revised form has been designed to work in concert with the information contained in the Medical and Physical Evaluation Guidelines for Merchant Mariner Credentials. To assist medical practitioners with submitting a complete report form, an Instruction Guide is available. These forms are available for voluntary use until December 31, 2009. All physical exams completed on or after January 1, 2010 must be documented on Revision 01-09.
Consistent with these important changes, ACOEM is pleased to announce that the issue of how to use these new forms will be covered at AOHC 2010 in Orlando. On Tuesday, May 4, ACOEM will present Session 2304 Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Seaman Medical Examinations But Were Afraid to Ask. Capt. Hall will be a member of the faculty along with Tony L. Alleman, MD, FACOEM, and Darren J. Duet, MD. The session will be moderated by Robert M. Bourgeois, MD, MPH, FACOEM, and is sponsored by ACOEMs Transportation Section.
If you are aware of other providers who conduct Merchant Mariner physical exams who are not ACOEM members, please feel free to forward this information to your colleagues.
